He tells her it’s probably the human response to the unknown, but moreso that he was completely in the wrong. Despite Joey’s clear feelings for Dawson and reprehensible behaviour towards Jen, they couple stay together – until Jen’s ex-boyfriend comes to town and Jen starts to doubt everything, including her relationship with Dawson. After Jen breaks up with him, she dates Cliff but soon realises she wants Dawson back. Dawson, meanwhile has begun to realise his feelings for Joey and reacts coldly to Jen’s advances.

Joey longing for Dawson for at least 2 to 3 seasons would of had people fiending for them to get together. Dawson needed to mature a lot more and Joey needed to detach herself from Dawson. So that’s why when we meet them in s1, Joey has a “thang” for Dawson. She feels closer to him than her Dad and even Bessie and Bodie. I think her mom and Dawson were the two closest people to her and when she lost her mom, she relied even more on Dawson in every way. And I think that when we meet them, they’re in a very, very dark place.” But he believes they’ll recover.
